In the automotive world we start looking for bad, corroded or loose, ground wires and connections when eletrical systems behave strangly. Pull the tank and check all connections from the battery ground leak to frame and all other ground spots. Also check ground circuits in the multi wire connectors to insure they have partly pulled apart.
